5/12/08 - General ReleasePeacock Director of Athletics Moving on after Banner Year Gil Cloud, Director of Athletics and Interim Director of Alumni Relations and Advancement, has resigned his position effective July 28, 2008. He will become a vice president for Atlas Pipeline LLC in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gil began his tenure here in August 2002. During the last six years, the athletics department has evolved into a "Model Division II Athletics Program" with a positive influence on the University community. The highlights during his tenure include many successes, first and foremost being the transition from NCAA Division III to Division II and gaining membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Gil established many department-wide policies as well, including a mandatory study hall for student-athletes and institutional drug testing for student-athletes. Under Gil's guidance, coaches were able to recruit a better class of student-athletes, which is corroborated by an increased GPA of entering student-athletes and continuing student-athletes, as well as an increase in student-athlete retention from 49% in 2002 to 78% in 2008. 5/12/08 - BaseballDanker Named NSIC Coach of the Year Head Baseball Coach Mark Danker has been selected by his peers as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Coach of the Year. The Peacocks finished the regular season in second place behind Wayne State. The Peacocks were tied in the win column, but had two more losses than the Wildcats. Danker is in his 9th season as the Peacocks' Head Baseball Coach and his 18th season as part of the baseball program at Upper Iowa. The Marengo, Iowa native spent the first ten years at UIU as the assistant coach under Rick Heller, the current Head Baseball Coach for the University of Northern Iowa. (MORE)
5/11/08 - BaseballNSIC Baseball Tournament Postponed/Shortened Due to Rain on Saturday Wayne, Neb. - The NSIC Office announced that the 2008 NSIC Baseball Tournament will be postponed on Saturday due to rain and be shortened to a single elimination tournament, which matches Concordia-St. Paul vs. Wayne State (the two undefeated team in the tournament) in the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The winner of tomorrow's championship game will earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament next week. Upper Iowa and Bemidji State, which already have one loss, have been eliminated from the tournament. (MORE)
