Dick Ingvall

DICK INGVALL, class of 1973, is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach. He was a four-year letter winner in wrestling for the Peacocks from 1970-73, serving as the team captain as a senior. Ingvall was a two-time Iowa Conference Champion, winning at 134 pounds in 1972 and at 142 pounds in 1973. He also finished second in 1970 and 1971. With a career record of 100-20, Ingvall was a vital cog for the Peacocks winning four conference titles (1970-73).

Ingvall earned his B.S. degree in Physical Education in 1973. He started an illustrious coaching career at Gilmore City-Brodgate in 1973, and after three years he moved to La Porte City to continue as coach at Union High School. He retired in 2005 with 324 victories, eighth on the all-time list in Iowa history. For 22 years, Ingvall's teams had winning records, and he earned Class 2A Coach of the Year recognition in 1988 and 2003. In addition, he was voted into the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004 with a Lifetime Service Award. Also in 2004, Ingvall received the National Federation Iowa Wrestling Coach of the Year award and the State Section IV Coach of the Year award.

His interscholastic record shows 105 state qualifiers and seven state champions. Ingvall's 2004 team captured the Dual Team Championship. Four other times his teams finished as state runners-up.

Ingvall is a graduate of Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. Dick and his wife Jan presently live in Vinton, Iowa. They have a daughter, Amy, who is a 1991 graduate of Upper Iowa. 

Alan Martindale

ALAN MARTINDALE, class of 1973, is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame as an athletic trainer. A native of Postville, Iowa and a 1969 graduate of Postville High School, he started his outstanding career in Athletic Training in 1969 as a student athletic trainer for the Peacocks. Martindale held this position for a year, working extensively with the football and wrestling programs. His senior year, Martindale was elected President of the Upper Iowa Letterman's Club.

Martindale's career goals in line, he attended Indiana State University at Terra Haute, Ind., earning a Masters of Science in 1974. Upon graduation, he took a position at Moline (Ill.) Senior High School as an Athletic Trainer and physical education instructor from 1974-77. Starting in 1977, Martindale embarked on an intercollegiate career that now totals 28 years at the University level. From 1977-83, he worked at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii, first as an assistant trainer and then for four years as the Head Athletic Trainer. In 1983, he accepted the position of Head Athletic Trainer in the prestigious Big Ten Conference at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill. He has worked with the Fighting Illini football program and now with the men's basketball program.

Martindale was inducted into the Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame in May 1995. He has been invited to research for the Big Ten and NCAA on knee, neck and head injuries. Martindale's work experience has taken him to nine college football bowl games, and he has worked with the U.S. National Swim Team. In addition, Martindale served as the Athletic Trainer for the 2004-2005 University of Illinois men's basketball team as the Illini marched to a Big Ten championship and a spot in the NCAA Final Four.

Alan and his wife Lisa reside in Savoy, Ill. and are the parents of Meghan and Marc. 

John Tierney

JOHN TIERNEY, class of 1960, is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete. A 1952 graduate of Lawler High School, Tierney was a third team All-State basketball player in 1951 and 1952. He entered Upper Iowa in 1958 after serving a two-year hitch in the military with the U.S. Army 82 Airborne Division.

A two-year Peacock letter winner and transfer to Upper Iowa, Tierney was named an Iowa Conference basketball first team forward in 1959 after averaging 17.1 points per game. In 1960, he repeated the first team honors, this time as a guard, averaging 18.3 points per contest. He was coached by the late Everett "Eb" Eischeid.

After graduation from Upper Iowa, Tierney earned his Master's Degree from the University of Iowa in 1961. Tierney embarked on a four-decade coaching-teaching career, starting at Britt, Iowa in 1961. During the fall of 1961, he moved to Illinois, teaching and coaching at Marmion Military Academy in Aurora. Tierney was named the sophomore basketball coach at Rock Falls (Ill.) High School in 1964 before taking over the head basketball coaching duties in 1969.

Tierney continued his basketball coaching career at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Ill. He retired from the teaching profession in 1999.

John and his wife Judy live in Homewood, Ill. They are the parents of Steve, Jill, Scott and Marc.

Dick Wold

DICK WOLD, class of 1966, is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete. He was a three-year baseball letter winner from 1963-65 while also earning letters as a Peacock basketball player. Wold was a three-peat baseball Iowa Intercollegiate Conference first team first baseman (1963-65). A long-ball, left-handed hitter, Wold had major league scouts following his play. In 1965, Wold signed a professional baseball contract with the Minnesota Twins, and played the 1965 and 1966 seasons with the Twins organization. Wold played his collegiate baseball under the late Coach Dr. Andre Nadeau.

Returning to Upper Iowa, Wold completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and earned a minor in Sociology. His teaching-coaching career started at Elkhorn-Kimballton High School in western Iowa for two years. In 1968, he moved to Maquoketa, Iowa and started teaching in the Middle School. He coached three sports, including serving as the head baseball coach for nine years. In 1975, Wold started a 24-year career as a school administrator, first as an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director, then a 13-year run as Principal of Maquoketa High School. He retired in 1999.

Wold is a 1962 graduate of M-F-L High School in Monona, Iowa where he attained all-state honors in baseball and basketball in 1961 and 1962.

Dick and his wife Elizabeth live in Maquoketa. His children are Mike, Teresa, and Andy.
