INDIANAPOLIS, IND.: The Upper Iowa University baseball team is ranked sixth in the most recent NCAA Division II Central Regional rankings released this morning by the NCAA national committee. The rankings are through games as of Sunday, Apr. 27.

The Peacocks were 25-23 overall and 21-7 in the Northern Sun at the time of the regional committee's call. Upper Iowa enters the NCAA Regional Rankings for the first time this season after posting a 6-0 record with sweeps over Bemidji State and Winona State last week. The Peacocks were ranked sixth in the region once last year late in the season.

After an extremely tough schedule over the opening month of the season, the Peacocks stood at 2-12. Since then the team has registered a 23-11 record including a .750 winning percentage in the NSIC. Twelve of the Peacocks' first twenty-two games were against ranked opponents including 16 games against the top eight teams in the Central Region. UIU currently has a 24-16 record in region games.

Upper Iowa is one of three NSIC schools to appear in the regional rankings with Wayne State, #2, and Concordia-St. Paul, #7. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association also has three teams in the regional rankings with Emporia State, #1, Central Missouri, #3, and Northwest Missouri State, #8. The North Central Conference has two teams ranked with Nebraska-Omaha, #4, and St. Cloud State, #5.

The top six teams in the region will advance to the NCAA regional tournament on May 15-18. Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the NSIC, NCC and MIAA postseason tournaments, with the remaining three spots awarded to an at-large team.

Upper Iowa (26-23, 21-7 NSIC) will wrap up their regular season this weekend in Bismarck, N.D. The Peacocks will match up with the Marauders of the University of Mary in a four-game, NSIC series. Both doubleheaders this weekend will begin at noon.
