NCAA Division II Regional Rankings
INDIANAPOLIS, IND.: The Upper Iowa University baseball team has held on their #6 ranking in the most recent NCAA Division II Central Regional rankings released yesterday by the NCAA National Committee. The rankings are based on region records through games as of Sunday, May 4. The Peacocks were 29-24 overall and had locked up second place with a 24-8 record in the Northern Sun at the time of the regional committee's call. Upper Iowa entered the NCAA Regional Rankings for the first time this season last week. Before yesterday's loss to Bemidji in the NSIC Tournament, Upper Iowa had won 13 of their last 15 games. The Peacocks were ranked sixth in the region once last year late in the season. After an extremely tough schedule over the opening month of the season, the Peacocks stood at 2-12. Since then the team has registered a 27-13 record including a .750 winning percentage in the NSIC. Twelve of the Peacocks' first twenty-two games were against ranked opponents including 16 games against the top eight teams in the Central Region. UIU currently has a 27-18 record in region games. Upper Iowa is one of three NSIC schools to appear in the regional rankings with Wayne State, #2, and Concordia-St. Paul, #7. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association also has three teams in the regional rankings with Emporia State, #1, Central Missouri, #4, and Missouri Western, #8. The North Central Conference has two teams ranked with Nebraska-Omaha, #3, and Minnesota State, #5. The top six teams in the region after the final poll following this weekend's action will advance to the NCAA regional tournament on May 15-18. Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the NSIC, NCC and MIAA postseason tournaments, with the remaining three spots awarded to an at-large team. Upper Iowa (29-25, 24-8 NSIC) will now play in the NSIC Tournament's first elimination game on Friday morning at 10 a.m. The Peacocks will play the Warriors of Winona State after dropping the opening game of the tournament to Bemidji State, 5-2.
