The Upper Iowa men's basketball team traveled to Bemidji, Minnesota on Saturday with an opportunity to move up to 6th place in the Northern Sun Conference. The Peacocks took the floor against the Beavers of Bemidji State in their final game of the regular season. Upper Iowa shot 52% in the first half en route to a seven point lead at halftime. Bemidji State rallied early in the second half, but the Peacocks held off the home team to win the contest 64-50. Upper Iowa and Bemidji State opened the game each scoring eight points through the first seven minutes of the game. Over the next eight minutes of action, the Peacocks opened up an eleven point lead, 25-14, thanks to a 17-6 run. The run was sparked by A.J. Adkins' eleven points. The visitors kept their double digit lead until the last shot of the half as BSU hit a three-pointer with 5 seconds to play to cut the margin to seven. UIU went to the locker room leading 33-26 at halftime. Both offenses struggled through the opening nine minutes, but the Beavers slowly cut into the deficit and trailed by only five, 43-38, with 11:21 on the clock. Upper Iowa quickly found their stride and began to pull away from the hosts building their largest lead of the game, 58-41, with just under four minutes to play. The Peacocks finished the victory out by the score of 64-50. Adkins led the Peacocks with 18 points including four three-pointers. Nick Kramer and Matt Lesan each chipped in 10 points for Upper Iowa, while Storm Schmitt and Alex Kramer netted 8 points. Alex Kramer led the team in rebounds with 5. Jude Roybal dished out 8 assists, while Dan Bestul handed out 5. After the Peacock victory and a loss by MSU Moorhead, Upper Iowa moved up to the sixth seed for the NSIC Tournament and earned a road trip to Marshall, Minnesota. UIU will face the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Mar. 1, at 7:00 p.m. Upper Iowa and Southwest Minnesota State have split the season series this year. |
