Peacocks Lose to Vikings in Non-Conference Affair

The Upper Iowa men's basketball team met future NSIC member, Augustana, on Tuesday night. The 4-1 Vikings went into the game a talented and confident team, and it showed. A young Peacock team was unable to match up with the Vikings. Augustana raced out to a 37-21 lead at half and held on for the victory 70-55.

Augustana dominated the first half by way of the three-pointer; the Vikings shot 7-13 from the arc. David Foster led the way for the Vikings with 9 points hitting 3 three-pointers. Upper Iowa struggled on both ends of the floor during the first half. The Peacocks shot 8-26 from the field and 1-10 from the three point line. Freshman led the way for the Peacocks as Dan Betsul notched 5 first half points and Chris Sullivan chipped in 4 points and 3 boards. The Vikings took a 16-point lead into halftime.

Upper Iowa opened the second half with some fire and pulled within 13 thanks to back-to-back lay ups by Storm Schmitt. Augustana extended their lead back to 20 points just 3 minutes later. Foster hurt the Peacocks as he did in the first half with two more three pointers. Upper Iowa hung around the second half by matching Augustana's offensive output, but could not get any closer than 11 points. A.J. Adkins made a huge basket to bring the score to 62-51 with 5:49 to play. The deficit stayed at 11 until Augustana slowed the game down and started using large chunks of the shot clock. The lead grew to 15 with two minutes remaining as Foster continued to score at will against the Peacocks; the sophomore finished with a game high 19 points.

Adkins led the Peacocks with 9 points, while Jude Roybal netted 7 and Schmitt, Sullivan, and Kramer all scored 6. Neil Gross led UIU on the boards with 7 rebounds. As a team, Upper Iowa out rebounded Augustana 33-27. Roybal dished out 5 assists and Matt Leasan dished out 4.

The Peacocks will be back in action this weekend, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, as they open the Northern Sun Conference schedule. Upper Iowa will travel to Aberdeen, South Dakota on Friday to face the Wolves of Northern State and then move on to Bismarck, North Dakota on Saturday to match up with the Marauders of the University of Mary.
