The Upper Iowa women's basketball team traveled to Crookston, Minnesota for the first game of the team's final road weekend this season. The Peacocks took the floor looking to move out of a tie at the bottom of the conference with the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston. The visitors found themselves ahead by eight at halftime thanks to Paige DeVine, Chelsea Petersen, and Ashley Martin who combined for 28 points in the first twenty minutes. The Peacocks secured the victory in the second half led by Britney Iredale's 18 points. Upper Iowa claimed the win by a 74-57 score and picked up their third NSIC victory of the year. Both offenses started slowly as the teams strolled out to a 5-5 tie four minutes into the first half. The Peacocks began to inch away as the half reached the midway point. UIU took a 20-13 lead after Andrea Downs hit a three-pointer. Moments later the lead was ten, 25-15, when Kim Thompson knocked home a jumper in the lane. After a trifecta by Martin and a jumper by DeVine, the Peacocks opened up a 30-17 lead with six minutes to play. The Golden Eagles closed the half by outscoring their guests 13-8 and headed to the locker room trailing 38-30. DeVine scored 11 in the half, Martin poured in 9 on three makes behind the arc, and Petersen netted 8 points. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 42-36 three minutes into the second half. The Peacocks regrouped and kept the momentum on their side. Upper Iowa went on an 18-4 run that gave the Peacocks a 60-40 lead with 10:32 to play. The run was fueled by nine points from Iredale including a three-pointer. Upper Iowa cruised over the last ten minutes of action. The Golden Eagles took one late charge, but the Peacocks stopped the run and returned the margin to twenty points before winning the game by seventeen, 74-57. Iredale's double-double led the Peacocks as the junior hit for 20 points and collected 10 rebounds. DeVine scored 13 points and handed out 5 assists, while Petersen and Martin each tallied 12 points. Christa Hammel led the team in rebounding with 11 and added 7 points. Downs registered 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in the game. The Peacocks (7-22, 3-14 NSIC) will now move on to Bemidji, Minnesota for their final game of the season. The Peacocks and Beavers of Bemidji State will tip off at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 23, tomorrow night. |
